Following unprecedented defeat Russia has redeployed its resources from Kyiv and changed focus to the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine.
The Russian military has already triggered a humanitarian catastrophe in the east, reducing Mariupol to ruins, but they have failed to defeat Ukraine's armed forces who have without doubt fought with honour in the face of overwhelming onslaught from the Kremlin´s military machine - certainly surprising Putin's inner sanctum of Generals and advisers and even the diminutive despot himself.
But why do the Russians want the Donbas and specifically Mariupol so much that they would risk global pariah status.
